Celebrating Women’s History: Karen Harris

by

March is Women’s History Month—a celebration and recognition of the vital influence and contribution women have played throughout our nation’s history (and still today.)

For this year’s celebration, we are featuring longtime RISD community member and current Senior Career Advisor and Internship Manager Karen Harris 86 IL. Karen was recently recognized by GoLocalProv as an “Artist to Know.”

In the article, Karen stated, “Being an employee that works with students and alums pursuing their creative path is very rewarding. As a Career Advisor, I absolutely love to dream of the future possibility with students and alumni. Mentoring and cheering others on are important to my perceived purpose in life.”

With regard to her art practice, Karen’s work spans a variety of mediums—from watercolor to oil—and often integrates Caribbean plant life, with particular focus on the banana leaf. A celebrated exhibitor, she is currently a featured artist in RISD’s first-ever Black Biennial, which is now on view in the Gelman Student Exhibitions Gallery.

Congratulations, Karen, on this well-deserved recognition!
