Time Off to Vote

Voting

At RISD, we recognize the fundamental importance of participating in public elections and encourage all employees to exercise their right to vote. We are committed to supporting our employees in this civic duty and ensuring they have the opportunity to make their voices heard.

Supervisors are encouraged to accommodate employees’ needs when it comes to voting. We understand that balancing work responsibilities and voting can be challenging, and we strive to make this process as smooth as possible.

Time Off for Voting

Employees are encouraged to make arrangements with their supervisors as far in advance as possible if a schedule adjustment is needed that supports their civic responsibility to vote while honoring their work commitments. No employee will be penalized or retaliated against for requesting time off to vote. We firmly uphold this practice to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and supported in fulfilling their civic responsibilities.

The times the polls are open extend beyond most normal work schedules and many jurisdictions offer options for how, when, and where to vote. Staff are welcome to use vacation or personal time to cover any time away from work needed to vote, if applicable, and in accordance with RISD policies. Faculty and other bargaining unit employees are encouraged to discuss arrangements with their Department Head/supervisors as soon as possible and in accordance with their collective bargaining agreements.

There are a variety of reasons you may want to vote by mail, including having plans to travel out of town on election day, a busy schedule, mobility concerns, or simply because it’s more convenient. To register for a Rhode Island mail ballot application, click here.

RISD is committed to supporting you in exercising this important right. Should you have any questions or require additional assistance or support, please do not hesitate to contact our Human Resources team at humres@risd.edu.
