Staff Disability

Rhode Island Temporary Disability and/or Caregiver Insurance (RI TDI)/(RI/TCI)

The State of Rhode Island provides Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) to eligible employees (as defined by the state) who are out of work due to a non-work related illness or injury for more than seven (7) consecutive days. Effective January 1, 2014 the State will also provide four (4) weeks of Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI) to eligible employees. An employee may obtain application forms from Human Resources, apply online at www.dlt.ri.gov/tdi or contact the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training at 401 462-8420.


Supplemental Short-Term Disability

In addition to the State TDI and at its sole expense, RISD provides supplemental short-term disability insurance through Lincoln Financial for staff budgeted to work at least 17.5 hours per week and 910 hours per year. See short-term disability claim instructions for more information.

Coverage: When combined with the RI Temporary Disability Insurance above, coverage normally equals approximately 80% of base earnings.
Start Date: First of the month coinciding with or following the date of hire.
End Date: Coverage ends on the last day of active employment.
Cost: RISD pays the full cost of this benefit.


Long-Term Disability

RISD offers staff budgeted to work at least 30 hours per week and 1560 hours per year Long-Term Disability Insurance through Lincoln Financial. Review the 2023 Long-Term Disability benefit summary for more information.

Coverage: Provides disabled employees 60% of basic annual earnings, not to exceed $10,000 per month subject to certain pre-existing condition limitations.
Start Date: First of the month coinciding with or following the date of hire.
Benefit Elimination Period: Six (6) months coinciding with TDI and/or Supplemental Short Term Disability.
End Date: Coverage ends on the last day of active employment.
Cost: Premium cost is $.37 per $100 covered earnings per month. RISD will pay 50% of premium cost.
