Changes to COVID-19-related Benefits
Earlier this year, the Biden Administration announced its intent to end the national emergency and public health emergency declarations on May 11, 2023, related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the Rhode Island State of Emergency for COVID-19 is also set to end on the same date.

As a result, as of May 12, 2023, BCBSRI and RISD’s pharmacy benefit manager CVS will be implementing coverage changes for COVID-19 vaccines, tests, and treatment. Highlights include but are not limited to:

  • 100% coverage for in-network COVID-19 vaccines
  • Covered COVID-19 lab testing with provider’s order
  • Over-the-counter COVID tests, however, will no longer be covered with or without a provider’s order. (Note that members will be able to purchase over-the-counter COVID tests using HSA/FSA funds.)

Transparency in Coverage Rule and Machine-Readable Files
This link leads to the machine-readable files that are made available in response to the federal Transparency in Coverage Rule and includes negotiated service rates and out-of-network allowed amounts between health plans and healthcare providers. The machine-readable files are formatted to allow researchers, regulators, and application developers to more easily access and analyze data. It is not intended to be a cost comparison tool for employees and dependents in RISD’s medical plans. To access BCBSRI’s plan cost comparison tools, please visit https://www.bcbsri.com/developers.
