Onboarding at RISD for Managers: Within Your New Employee’s First Month

During your new employee’s first month (30 days) with RISD, this is the time where they are becoming familiar with the performance expectations for their position, as well continuing to develop in their role, learning about the college and department, and building relationships.

  • Continue making introductions to campus partners and bring your employee to relevant meetings and events.

  • Meet with your employee at the end of the first 30 days to:
    • Review observations, issues/opportunities, and priorities
    • Continue to clarify role, responsibilities, and expectations as needed.
    • Confirm Harassment and Discrimination training has been completed.
    • Establish a plan for professional development and encourage training opportunities.
    • Answer questions and concerns
  • Schedule and conduct recurring one-on-one meetings to provide ongoing and meaningful feedback. Feedback is a critical component to successfully acclimate your new employee.
  • Ask for feedback from the employee and be available to answer questions.
  • Review goal/expectation setting, check-in conversation, and end-of-year conversation processes and begin discussing short-term and long-term goals and priorities.
  • Debrief with employee after they attend initial meetings, attend training, and begin work on their first assignment.

  • New employees should continue to familiarize themselves with college policies. Be sure to ask questions to confirm their understanding and/or to provide clarity.

  • Arrange for your employee to attend other college and department/division meetings, as applicable.

  • Ensure your employee attended New Employee Orientation.
  • Ensure your employee is signed up for all necessary training.
  • Ask your employee to share their thoughts on what they’ve experienced and learned to date and what would be helpful for them in the future.
