Onboarding at RISD for New Employees: Within Your First Week

During your first week, you will meet with your manager to build knowledge of internal processes and performance expectations, begin to acclimate to RISD’s community and culture, and engage with your new colleagues.

  • Meet or keep in regular contact with your manager to:
    • Continue to build knowledge of internal processes and performance expectations related to your position
    • Learn more about how your job fits in the department, and how the job and department contribute to the Division and RISD as a whole
    • Discuss hours of work, department policies related to overtime (if applicable) and College policies for flexible work, vacation, personal, sick time, holidays, etc.
    • Discuss how to navigate the team and RISD culture to be successful
  • Review and discuss performance management processes, as well as RISD’s core competencies for staff and leaders

  • Schedule an appointment with a member of our RISD Benefits Team if you have any questions on your benefit options and elections, or if you have not yet been able to make your elections in Workday. Contact Melanie Gomes at mgomes01@risd.edu.

  • Finalize set-up of your personal workspace and any relevant technology
  • Continue learning how to navigate Workday and other relevant systems. Ensure familiarity with time tracking (such as time entry and requesting time off) and other common employee transactions, as applicable. For hourly paid staff, be sure to enter hours worked by no later than the end of your first week.

  • Consider taking a prospective student campus-wide tour with RISD’s Admissions Office to better familiarize yourself with other buildings and locations on campus where meetings may be held; dining facilities are located; etc.

  • Continue building connections with your peers and colleagues to learn more about their roles. Some suggestions include 1:1 meetings, lunch or coffee appointments, attend campus events, or connect with your manager for suggestions of what works best in your team.
  • Explore the resources on risd.edu to learn more about RISD’s culture, identity, upcoming events, and other opportunities for community involvement.
  • Get familiar with RISD lingo commonly used around campus.

  • Take time to explore key websites for relevant and helpful information:
  • View the various “how to” videos offered by RISD ITS, including those related to Workday, Gmail, Zoom, and more.
  • Be on the lookout for an invitation to our Harassment and Discrimination Training which should be completed within 30 days. If you do not receive an invitation within your first two weeks, please reach out to success@getinclusive.com.
  • Begin to familiarize yourself with resources available through LinkedIn Learning and RISD Learns. LinkedIn Learning, an online learning platform with courses in four categories: Business, Creative, Technology, and Certifications. RISD Learns, in partnership with RI Higher Education Training Consortium, offers programs and courses across an array of topics. Check with your manager about any department or industry specific association memberships that you can get access to for additional training opportunities.
